Skincare 101: Collagen And Elastin
If only the Fountain of Youth was more than just a metaphorical place, and we could use it to preserve the tight, smooth, plump skin we are born with.
But, over time, our skin slowly loosens and begins to wrinkle. We know, we hit you with the hardest fact of all right off the bat. But keep reading.
Why does this happen? Of course, gravity is taking its toll on us, but let’s get down to the nitty gritty scientific aspect of it.
Let’s talk about what it is in our body that is actually chemically changing, leading to the noticeable physical changes in our skin.
What are collagen and elastin?
Collagen and elastin–these are two words we hear a lot when talking about skincare. They are the primary structural component proteins that make up our skin. While they are often grouped together in discussion, they are actually two separate things:
Collagen
Collagen refers to the group of proteins that are found naturally in several different areas of your body. It is the “cellular glue” giving connective tissue its shape and keeping it strong.
Elastin
This is basically what it sounds like–it gives our skin its elasticity. Elastin is what allows tissues the ability to “snap back” to their previous shape and form.
Both of these work in conjunction with one another to keep our skin tight and strong, with collagen acting as the foundation and then the elastin acting as a support.
How Can You Promote Healthy Collagen and Elastin Production?
While you can’t avoid the depletion of collagen and elastin, there are ways to promote healthy production of it, therefore rejuvenating your skin and giving yourself that glowing look.
Think about your diet.
Eating healthier is always beneficial to your body, including your skin, which is your largest organ. Incorporating things like antioxidant plant compounds, which can be found in foods like blueberries, nuts, and seeds, is a great way to promote healthier skin.
Stay hydrated.
Your skin is mostly made up of water, so it only makes sense that staying hydrated promotes healthier skin.
Get a facial massage.
A great facial massage is a guilty pleasure, of course, but it is also beneficial. So, say hello to more days at the spa. That facial massage is a great way to improve muscle memory and stimulate collagen production.
Skincare is an ongoing process. Much like taking a shower or brushing your teeth, skincare should be a normal part of your routine.
Aging is inevitable, but you can find some loopholes!
